Week 5 Game and Story of the Week

September 22, 2009

Game of the Week: Menomonie @ Superior

Who’da thunk it? Chippewa Falls knocked off the BRC pedestal.

For now.

Menomonie and Superior, the only 2-0 teams left in the conference, will face off at Ole Haugsrud Field in Superior on Friday night. The game carries some added meaning for the Spartans two big ways. First off, the game will be the Spartans homecoming game. Since taking over for Superior, Head Coach Bob DeMeyer has gone 2-1 in homecoming games with his only loss coming by one point to Chippewa Falls in 2007. Secondly, the Spartans have never beaten Coach Labuda and the Menomonie Indians.

The two teams have similar conference records but when it comes to their strongest units, both teams hang their hats on different sides of the ball. Menomonie and their high-powered offense have averaged 30 points a game, boasting a lethal passing attack along with a revived running game that showcased itself in a 35-0 victory last week over North. The Spartans on the other hand have picked up their two victories in defensive battles against Rice Lake and Hudson.

Story of the Week: Chippewa Falls Offense

What a tough loss for the Cardinals last week and I’m not just talking about the scoreboard. Cardinals quarterback Shawn Peterson was knocked out of the game with a knee injury with the severity unknown at this point. Starting running back Jared Jaquish came into the game to fill in at quarterback and in the end the Cardinals weren’t able to recover in their 19-14 loss to Hudson. Head Coach Chuck Raykovich will be looking for two things this week when he and the Cardinals head to River Falls to take on the Wildcats. First, his 200th victory. And secondly, a way to help Brad Heumphner and the Cardinals offense overcome the loss of Peterson. Heumphner is a phenomenal player and he might be able to do it alone against River Falls, but when the Cardinals head to Menomonie and Superior later this season, they will need a more complete offensive attack to stay atop the BRC.
