Looking ahead to National Signing Day

February 2, 2010

In less than 24 hours, the 2010 National Signing Day will commence and a lot of the best players from the BRC Class of 2010 have yet to make their college decisions. First off, let’s take a look at those who have decided where they will be next season:

Superior defensive back Zach Colvin chose the NDSU Bison before the 2009 season begun after being offered a scholarship at an individual camp in June. Commitment Article

BRC 1st teamers as juniors, Hudson offensive lineman Sam Cunningham and Menomonie tight end Levi Kraft will be Mavericks next season, playing for the up and coming NSIC Minnesota-State Mankato. Commitment Article

The anchor of the Chippewa Falls defense since his sophomore year, Chi-Hi linebacker Jake Sullivan also chose the Division II level and stayed in the NSIC with his choice of the St. Cloud State Huskies. Commitment Article

Mixing it up with the best of the 2010 class of defensive backs, Rice Lake’s CJ Damaske became the first D-III recruit to commit and will become the eighth former BRC player to join the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds. Commitment Article

Over the weekend Menomonie quarterback Kasey Kruse, the most decorated player in the class of 2010, finally decided that he wanted to suit up at the next level and joined Damaske as the Blugolds second-known BRC recruit of 2010. Commitment Article

Another commitment that just came in last night is Superior fullback Chad Murray, he will be attending UW-Stout next year and hopes to walk-on with the football team there.

Next, let’s take a look at some of the big names still out there that have not committed or even decided whether or not they will continue playing at the college level.

Hudson defensive lineman Chas Larson- considering Division II Augustana (SD) and Bemidji State, both schools have extended preferred-walk on invitations. Larson also considering attending UW-Madison for solely academic purposes.

Eau Claire Memorial quarterback Zac Mestelle- most interested in Bemidji State. Also considering Concordia St. Paul, UW-La Crosse, Augsburg and UW-Stout. Mestelle also informed me that he is “still throwing around the idea of going to a junior college for a year with the hopes of getting some more looks by other schools.”

Chippewa Falls tight end Matt Leis- received interest before the season from St. Cloud State, Minnesota-State Mankato, North Dakota and St. Thomas.

Menomonie wide receiver Austin Berend- considering Minnesota-State Mankato (where teammate Levi Kraft already committed), UW-Eau Claire and Winona State.

Chippewa Falls running back Jared Jaquish- considering both Winona State and Bemidji State.

Eau Claire North wide receiver/defensive back Tyler Sonsalla- receiving interest from Division I Western Michigan along with numerous Division II and Division III schools throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. Also receiving interest in basketball from St. Norbert’s.

Hudson defensive back Mike Bennett- considering UMD, Bemidji State, UW-Lacrosse, UW-River Falls and Minnesota State-Mankato.

River Falls tight end/defensive end Zach Pavlichek- considering UW-Lacrosse to play football or University of Minnesota-Twin Cities for schooling.

Chippewa Falls offensive lineman Brian Krause- considering UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point.

Hudson defensive lineman Ethan Dinaeur- most interested in Bemidji State followed by UW-La Crosse and UW- Stout. Also considering academic route at either UW-Madison or University of Minnesota.

Superior kicker Dave Zastrow- most interested in Augsburg College. Also considering St. Scholastica and St. Thomas.

Superior linebacker Jake Turkowski- considering UW-Stout and St. Scholastica.

These twelve players listed above may not make their decisions tomorrow but have informed me that they will make a decision over the next 2-3 weeks. Superior defensive back Mike Lavalley is the only known player that will be making his decision tomorrow and will be calling the school of his choice to inform them of his commitment. Lavalley is considering UW-Stout and St. Scholastica in his decision tomorrow.

Here is a list of players that have informed me they are being recruited but have not made a decision yet.

Rice Lake running back Trever Mickelson

Eau Claire North quarterback Brett Bodenburg

Finally, here is a list of players that have decided to not play football next season, but pursue other post-secondary avenues. Despite not choosing to play college football, expect to hear from these players as we look back at their high school careers over the next few weeks.

Superior linebacker Ethan Taylor

River Falls linebacker Ben Wunrow

Chippewa Falls defensive back/returner Alex Ruf
